4.2 Reduction of Order: Class Notes

4.2a

Consider a 2nd-order DE

a2(x)y″+a1(x)y′+a0(x)y=0(1)

If y1,y2 form a fundamental set of solutions, then they are linearly independent. If c1y1+c2y2=0 with c1 and c2≠0, we could write

y2=−c1c2y1.

Because y1 and y2 are linearly independent, the multiplier −c1c2 cannot be a constant; it must be a function of x. So we look for

y2=u(x)y1,

where u(x) is an unknown function of x.

In standard form, (1) becomes

y″+P(x)y′+Q(x)y=0.

If y1 is a known solution, consider y2=uy1. By the product rule,

y2′=u′y1+uy1′,y2″=u″y1+2u′y1′+uy1″.

Substitute y2″, y2′, and y2=uy1 into the standard form:

u″y1+2u′y1′+uy1″+P(x)(u′y1+uy1′)+Q(x)uy1=0.

The three terms containing u itself (not its derivatives) group together, and their sum is zero because y1 is a solution:

u(y1″+P(x)y1′+Q(x)y1)=0(y1 is a solution).

What remains is

u″y1+2u′y1′+Pu′y1=0u″y1+(2y1′+Py1)u′=0.

Let w=u′. Then w′=u″, and the equation becomes first order and linear in w:

w′y1+(2y1′+Py1)w=0w′+(2y1′y1+P)w=0.

Integrating factor (since ∫2y1′y1dx=2ln⁡|y1|=ln⁡y12):

μ=e∫(2y1′y1+P)dx=eln⁡y12e∫Pdx=y12e∫Pdx.

So

ddx(y12e∫Pdxw)=0y12e∫Pdxw=c.

We only need one y2, so let c=1:

u′=w=e−∫Pdxy12u=∫e−∫Pdxy12dx.

Then y2=uy1, and the general solution is y=c1y1+c2y2.

The reduction of order formula is

y2=y1∫e−∫P(x)dxy12dx

4.2b

Example

The indicated function y1(x) is a solution of the given differential equation. Use reduction of order (the process or the formula) to find a second solution y2(x).

y″+9y=0;y1=sin⁡3x

Solution

Process. Let y2=u(x)y1. Here, y2=usin⁡3x. By the product rule,

y2′=u′sin⁡3x+3ucos⁡3xy2″=u″sin⁡3x+3u′cos⁡3x+3u′cos⁡3x−9usin⁡3x=u″sin⁡3x+6u′cos⁡3x−9usin⁡3x.

Substitute into y″+9y=0. The u terms cancel:

u″sin⁡3x+6u′cos⁡3x−9usin⁡3x+9usin⁡3x=0u″sin⁡3x+6u′cos⁡3x=0.

Let w=u′, so w′=u″. The equation is first order in w (linear, and also separable):

w′sin⁡3x+6wcos⁡3x=0w′+6cos⁡3xsin⁡3xw=0.

μ=e6∫cos⁡3xsin⁡3xdx=e2ln⁡|sin⁡3x|=sin2⁡3x

ddx(sin2⁡3xw)=0sin2⁡3xw=cu′=w=ccsc2⁡3xu=c∫csc2⁡3xdx=−13ccot⁡3x+C1.

Then

y2=uy1=−13ccot⁡3xsin⁡3x=−13ccos⁡3x.

Tip: We don't need the constants. The C1 term would only give back a multiple of y1, and the constant −13c is absorbed into c2 in the general solution, so take y2=cos⁡3x.

y=c1sin⁡3x+c2cos⁡3x

Answer: y2(x)=cos⁡3x

Example

6y″+y′−y=0;y1=ex/3

Solution

Formula. First put the equation in standard form (divide by 6):

y″+16y′−16y=0⇒P(x)=16.

Here e−∫P(x)dx=e−x/6 and y12=e2x/3:

y2=y1∫e−∫Pdxy12dx=y1∫e−x/6e2x/3dx=y1∫e−5x/6dx=y1(−65e−5x/6+C).

We don't need these constants (−65 and C), so

y2=ex/3e−5x/6=e−x/2,y=c1ex/3+c2e−x/2.

Answer: y2=e−x/2

4.2c

Example

x2y″−3xy′+5y=0;y1=x2cos⁡(ln⁡x)

Solution

Standard form (divide by x2):

y″−3xy′+5x2y=0⇒P(x)=−3x.

Then, using the log rule 3ln⁡x=ln⁡x3,

e−∫P(x)dx=e∫3xdx=e3ln⁡x=eln⁡x3=x3.

y2=x2cos⁡(ln⁡x)∫x3x4cos2⁡(ln⁡x)dx=x2cos⁡(ln⁡x)∫1xsec2⁡(ln⁡x)dx.

Substitute u=ln⁡x, du=1xdx:

y2=x2cos⁡(ln⁡x)tan⁡(ln⁡x)=x2sin⁡(ln⁡x).

Answer: y2=x2sin⁡(ln⁡x)

Example

The indicated function y1(x) is a solution of the associated homogeneous equation. Use the method of reduction of order [the process] to find a second solution y2(x) of the homogeneous equation and a particular solution yp(x) of the given nonhomogeneous equation.

y″−4y′+3y=x;y1=ex

Dr. Matt's recommendation: for nonhomogeneous DEs, use the process, not the formula.

Solution

The process starts with y2=uy1, but for a nonhomogeneous equation we find that uy1 contains both pieces:

uy1=Cy2+yp.

Let y2=uex. Then

y2′=u′ex+uex,y2″=u″ex+2u′ex+uex.

Substitute into y″−4y′+3y=x. The uex terms cancel (1−4+3=0):

u″ex+2u′ex+uex−4u′ex−4uex+3uex=xu″ex−2u′ex=x.

Let w=u′:

w′ex−2wex=x⇒w′−2w=xe−x.

This is linear with integrating factor μ=e−2x:

∫ddx(e−2xw)dx=∫xe−3xdxe−2xw=−13xe−3x−19e−3x+Cu′=w=−13xe−x−19e−x+Ce2x

Integrate again (by parts for the first term; the constant C2 is renamed C):

u=13xe−x+49e−x+Ce2x.

Multiply by y1=ex to get uy1:

uy1=13x+49+Ce3x.

The term with the arbitrary constant is the second homogeneous solution, and the rest is the particular solution.

Answer: y2=e3x,yp=13x+49
