8.1 Preliminary Theory–Linear Systems: Class Notes

8.1a

Parallels exist between concepts, theorems, and vocabulary of linear differential equations and linear systems of differential equations:

Recall from algebra: A system of equations can be represented as a matrix equation. For instance, the system

{2x+3y−5z=127x+4y+6z=18−2x+z=−27

can be represented by the matrix equation

(23−5746−201)(xyz)=(1218−27)

Multiplying each row of the coefficient matrix by the column (x,y,z) gives back the left side of each equation, row by row:

(2x+3y−5z7x+4y+6z−2x+z)=(1218−27)

Row 1 (blue) is the first equation, row 2 (green) the second, and row 3 (magenta) the third. The missing y in the third equation becomes a 0 in the matrix.

In this chapter, we will primarily be concerned with linear systems of DEs that have the forms

𝐗′=𝐀𝐗and𝐗′=𝐀𝐗+𝐅(t)

The first form, 𝐗′=𝐀𝐗, is a homogeneous system; the second, with the extra term 𝐅(t), is nonhomogeneous.

Example 1

Write the given linear system in matrix form.

{dxdt=4x−7ydydt=5x

Solution

The coefficients of x and y fill the rows of the matrix; the second equation has no y, so its second entry is 0.

(dxdtdydt)=(4−750)(x(t)y(t))

The left side is 𝐗′, the matrix is 𝐀, and the column of unknowns is 𝐗, so this is

Answer: 𝐗′=(4−750)𝐗

Example 2

Write the given linear system in matrix form.

{dxdt=−3x+4y+e−tsin⁡2tdydt=5x+9z+4e−tcos⁡2tdzdt=y+6z−e−t

Solution

Split each right side into the part with x, y, z (which goes into 𝐀𝐗) and the part that depends only on t (which goes into 𝐅(t)).

(dxdtdydtdzdt)=(−340509016)(xyz)+(e−tsin⁡2t4e−tcos⁡2t−e−t)

This has the form 𝐗′=𝐀𝐗+𝐅(t). Every entry of 𝐅(t) has a factor of e−t, so it can be factored out of the column:

Answer: 𝐗′=(−340509016)𝐗+(sin⁡2t4cos⁡2t−1)e−t

Example 3

Write the given linear system without the use of matrices.

𝐗′=(75−94110−23)𝐗+(021)e5t−(803)e−2t

Solution

Here 𝐗=(xyz) and 𝐗′=(dx/dtdy/dtdz/dt). Row 1 of the matrix times the column 𝐗 gives the right side of the first equation, and so on; then add the matching entries of the two forcing columns.

Answer: dxdt=7x+5y−9z−8e−2tdydt=4x+y+z+2e5tdzdt=−2y+3z+e5t−3e−2t

Example 4

Verify that the vector 𝐗 is a solution of the given homogeneous linear system.

𝐗′=(21−10)𝐗;𝐗=(13)et+(4−4)tet

Solution

In components, x=et+4tet and y=3et−4tet. Compute both sides of 𝐗′=𝐀𝐗 and compare.

Left side. Differentiate; the product rule gives ddt(tet)=et+tet:

𝐗′=(13)et+(4−4)(et+tet)=(13)et+(4−4)et+(4−4)tet=(5−1)et+(4−4)tet

Right side. Multiply the matrix by 𝐗 written as a single column:

(21−10)𝐗=(21−10)(et+4tet3et−4tet)=(2et+8tet+3et−4tet−et−4tet)=(5et+4tet−et−4tet)=(5−1)et+(4−4)tet

The two sides agree, so 𝐗 is a solution.

Answer: 𝐗′=(5−1)et+(4−4)tet=(21−10)𝐗✓
